For centuries, lordships such as Brabant, Holland, Zeeland, Friesland, Geldern held a changing patchwork of territories within the Holy Roman Empire. There was no unified equivalent of the modern Holland. In the Eighty Years War the Dutch Republic gained independence from Spain. The conflict had many sides:

• religious - the Dutch seeking freedom from the Catholic Inquisition;
• financial - wealthy merchants seeking relief from taxes used to finance conquests from which they gained little; and
• political - nobles seeking to maintain authority over a growing middle class.

These tensions simmered for many years before violently erupting in 1568. Revolution! casts five players into leadership of the important factions of the conflict, viz., Catholics, Habsburgs, Nobles, Burghers, and Reformers. It attempts to recreate the tension, scheming, uproar, and military maneuvering of this time.

This section describes the board and basic game terms (underlined below). The board maps an area consisting of present-day Holland, Belgium, Luxemburg, and small parts of France and Germany. To ease understanding of the map (and convey individual player powers), I will provide you a player aid. The game uses every square inch of board space, which also depicts scoring and information tables.

The map is divided into 16th century regions, most of which are subdivided into provinces. Most provinces, in turn, feature a number of cities and towns. Some of the cities feature bishoprics; others feature universities.
